Self-improvement
may involve many different techniques to improve one’s emotional, intellectual, or economical health. It generally utilizes publicly available information or support groups, such as a Twelve-Step program, or self-help books, tapes, videos, etc. According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, “potential benefits of self-help groups that professionals may not be able to provide include friendship, emotional support, experiential knowledge, identity, meaningful roles, and a sense of belonging.” Self-improvement may also include learning about health problems, adopting a program of exercise and nutrition, or anything to improve one’s education, emotional well-being, self-confidence, appearance, love life, career, finances etc.
There are literally thousands of self-improvement books, blogs, and videos available. It’s difficult to recommend a specific one because it depends on what area of life you’re hoping to improve. Everyone also has a different preference or style of writing that they will respond to in regards to self-improvement. Some of the more popular self-help authors include Dr. Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins, Martha Beck, Louise Hay, Zig Ziglar, Marianne Williamson, Dr. Phil McGraw, M. Scott Peck and Caroline Myss. That is just a small sampling of a long list of self-help specialists. Use your favorite search engine to research the area of your life you wish to improve. A quick study of the different books and authors will provide you with one you feel most comfortable with and will help with your own self-improvement program.
